Abstract

The aspiration of Prime Minister Imran Khan for the establishment of ‘State of Medina’ warrants to work towards building Quaid’s Pakistan based on Islamic teachings. It has been seen with contempt by seculars, while political opponents are grudgingly criticizing the idea for narrow political interests and lack of understanding of the ideology of Pakistan. Therefore, the paper explores this resistance to ideology and prospects of working out a roadmap for the resurgence of ideology to withstand the secular forces that tend to shoot down the idea of the State of Medina. It is established that all the constitutions (1956, 1962, 1973) visualized Pakistan to be an Islamic republic; however, the secular forces have gradually added misperception about the ideology of Pakistan. The religious political parties have kept the ideology as a political slogan but failed to bring forward any assuring roadmap in line with the Islamic framework barring few controversial steps by General Zia towards Islamization of some laws. The research has observed that the State’s evasion of the responsibility to prepare the public to move towards state systems based on strong pillars of Islam has led us to the present quagmire, while the non-state actors have started making a claim of right on Islam and have allowed secular forces to take up stronger position in the garb of peace and security. Contrary to most of the history books, attempting to support or negate the ideology, this paper in an attempt to delimit in terms of time and scope, is focused on exploring the inimical attempts to undo ideology and resistance against its manifestation in post-independence era, while suggesting a roadmap for the resurgence of ideology to prepare the environment for the ultimate objective of reformation of state on the line of principles of the State of Medina. In this study, historical and analytical research methodology has been adopted with a qualitative approach.
